CENTRE FOR COMMERCIALIZATION OF RESEARCH

Centre for Commercialization of Research helps high potential technology-based companies build the capacity to become sustainable global competitors. Success is measured by the company's ability to create new jobs, raise follow-on financing, secure a solid market position, grow and become profitable - and by the resulting economic benefits to Canada.

The primary focus is on economically crucial areas such as energy, the environment and natural resources; health and medical technologies; and information and communications technologies. Companies can access OCE's own commercialization programs, as well as the capabilities of partner organizations across Canada, including Canada's investment community, ensuring that businesses have access to a comprehensive suite of resources and expertise.

Support and advice are available in three primary areas:

Embedded Executives - Assistance and financial support to acquire the services of an experienced entrepreneur or business executive to work inside the company for a limited time as an embedded management coach.

Access to Capital - CCR works with emerging venture-grade, high-potential companies by providing advice and assistance to determine the best financing options available to the company, and introductions to national and international investors and funding agencies through OCE's expanding network.

Access to Business Resources - Through OCE's partner network, CCR will provide advice and direct assistance to facilitate access to a range of business services and resources including funding, research, highly qualified people, professional services, industry networks, connections to foreign markets, intellectual property management, training and other business needs.

Eligibility

To be considered, the company must

  • be incorporated federally or provincially in Canada
  • be in a position to share project costs, and
  • submit information on the business, including a credible business plan and a statement of needs.
  • have a unique proprietary technology with defendable intellectual property and/or a high barrier to competition
  • have a large national/international addressable market

Application Process

The first step is a preliminary assessment of the business opportunity. This assessment starts upon receipt of the company's information and considers factors such as:

  • Commercial potential of the proposed product or service,
  • Viability of the business proposition,
  • Strength of the technology, including robustness of the intellectual property, and/or barrier to competition,
  • Strength and commitment of the team, and
  • Fit with OCE's technology focus areas and programs,

The second step is a face to face interview with the company. Both steps are conducted by OCE's commercialization and business development professionals. If the assessment is positive, OCE will qualify the company as a Centre for Commercialization of Research client.

OCE professionals then work with the company to determine specifically what the company needs to strengthen, identify how OCE and its partners can help, and, if warranted, to develop a proposal for Centre for Commercialization of Research funding. If the analysis concludes that the client could benefit from other programs of OCE, its partners, or other organizations, OCE staff help the client to access these programs.
