Collaborative Commercialization: College Applied Research and Development

Looking to quickly build your technical competitive edge?
An Ontario college might hold the solution

Ontario college researchers and students have the talent and skill to address today's industry challenges that hold back start-ups, small- or medium sized businesses, or even large companies. Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) can connect you to the best Ontario colleges have to offer to take your business to the next level.

What is College Applied Research and Development?

OCE's College Applied Research and Development program supports collaborative projects between companies and Ontario colleges that extend the development resources and capabilities of the company. The program engages the unique technical skills of Ontario colleges and strengthens connections with local industry.

Projects leverage the unique capabilities of the colleges to help the company bring new, innovative products to market quickly and with features that will win new customers. College teams can help with engineering, development, test and implementations. The projects provide a great opportunity to identify talented individuals who should be part of the company team.

For college students, the short-term research projects form part of their studies, giving them real-world challenges and advancing the technology development capabilities of their respective colleges.

HOW DOES THE FUNDING WORK?

Typical program investments are between $25,000 and $75,000, with a maximum investment of $250,000 per project. Projects are typically 9-18 months in duration. Industry partners must make a cash plus in-kind contribution to the project, matching or exceeding OCE’s investment.

"It is very difficult for smaller companies like us to find the right technology research partners. We would never have been able to tap into them if OCE had not directed us."
Anand Srinivasan,
Vice President,
EION Inc.

"With our research becoming more and more globally recognized, Ontario Colleges have an abundance of talent and skills to address today’s industry challenges. Whether it be multidisciplinary research or applied research, we know how to bring different elements together and solve problems."
Dr. Darren Lawless,
Dean of Applied Research,
Sheridan College

"As a small company, we can’t sustain a research group and are often unaware of cutting-edge tools that can make our products more competitive. The research leverage that our OCE-funded collaboration provides is invaluable in keeping abreast of the latest developments."
Leila Boujnane,
Founder and CEO,
Idée Inc.
