Collaborative Commercialization: Collaborative Research

From Idea to Income

Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Collaborative Research program spurs innovation by promoting research partnerships between Ontario's industry and academia. These long term collaborations, lasting from one to three years, develop commercially viable technologies while providing training opportunities for students, post doctoral fellows and other highly qualified personnel.

What is Collaborative Research?

OCE's Collaborative Research program helps to foster an innovative research partnership between Ontario industry and academia. Typically lasting between one and three years, a collaborative project helps to develop a commercially-viable technology that can result in new revenues and high-value jobs Ontario.

In addition, the Collaborative Research program also facilitates the cooperation necessary for solving tough industry problems, while advancing innovative technologies critical in building and sustaining Ontario's innovation economy.

The program also greatly benefits students, post-doctoral fellows and other highly qualified personnel by providing real-world training opportunities where they can advance their skills and expertise.

HOW DOES THE FUNDING WORK?

OCE's investment is determined by the support and commitment from the partners. Typically, collaborative projects involve an annual OCE investment between $150,000 and $200,000. Funding flows directly to the academic research institution. Industry partners make a cash and in-kind contribution that matches or exceeds that of OCE.

"It is very difficult for smaller companies like us to find the right technology research partners. We would never have been able to tap into them if OCE had not directed us."
Anand Srinivasan,
Vice President,
EION Inc.

"You can't design a device. You design a process. At one point there is a widget that you sell, but you have to design every part that leads up to that. You have to know where it’s going to go or you end up being hit by hidden points of failure."
Nicolas Morgan,
Director of Business Development,
Morgan Solar

"As a small company, we can't sustain a research group and are often unaware of cutting-edge tools that can make our products more competitive. The research leverage that our OCE-funded collaboration provides is invaluable in keeping abreast of the latest developments."
Leila Boujnane,
Founder and CEO,
Idée Inc.
