Technology Transfer Partnership: Institutional Proof of Principle

The Institutional Proof of Principle (IPoP) program helps public research institutions advance research discoveries to market-ready innovations through early stage Proof of Principle (PoP) Funds. Institutional PoP (IP development project funding) in partnership with multi-institution networks positions discoveries to be further supported by the suite of services under the Industry-Academic Collaboration Program (IACP). IPoP is modeled after the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation's Ontario Research and Commercialization Program B (ORCP B).

What is Institutional Proof of Principle?

The Institutional Proof of Principle (IPoP) program provides funding to multi-institution networks. Networks are comprised of publiclyfunded Ontario academic institutions. IPoP helps bridge the gap between research discovery and market ready invention. This program enables Intellectual Property development project funding and is the responsibility of OCE and delivered in partnership with the multi-institutional technology transfer networks.

The IPOP program is designed to:

  • Exploit IP developed within Ontario research institutions for the benefit of the province and bridge the gap between research discovery and market-ready innovation
  • Ensure the implementation of best practices in technology transfer and IP management and make more efficient use of technology transfer resources
  • Ensure and support a province-wide community of best practices in technology transfer and IP management

"The PoP program elevated great ideas emerging from U of T and the affiliated hospital, into industry ready technologies. Some technologies ended up becoming spin-out companies that MaRS Innovation incorporated recently and some other are the subject of meaningful negotiation for out-licensing to strategic industrial partners."
Dr. Rafi Hofstein,
President and CEO,
MaRS Innovation

"C4 funding really made all the difference. We were able to engage industry leaders and the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. in a rigorous study to demonstrate the compliance of the tool's measurements with industry standards. This really helped pave the way for market acceptance."
