Commercialization: Martin Walmsley Fellowship

A prestigious competition that elevates an outstanding Ontario start-up

Researchers across the province are working with Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) to turn cutting edge technologies into promising start-up companies that create jobs and generate revenue for Ontario. From these researchers, OCE selects the very best for a prestigious fellowship that vaults the winner's product or technology towards commercial success.

What is the Martin Walmsley Fellowship?

Through an annual competition, the Martin Walmsley Fellowship for Technological Entrepreneurship supports an academic innovator in the creation of a technologically innovative business venture from OCE-supported research.

A small number of candidates are selected by an esteemed panel of business and research leaders with the winner of the Martin Walmsley Fellowship being well positioned to launch their venture with the potential of being a leader in the global marketplace.

The Fellowship honors the vision of Dr. Martin Walmsley, one of OCE's founders, who developed programs dedicated to stimulating strategic research leading to economic growth in Ontario.

"The Martin Walmsley Fellowship transformed Certo Labs from a 'virtual' company to a 'real' company. It enabled us to build our first prototype and also provided us with the resources to file our patents. These steps positioned Certo to create a market-ready product for 2010."
Ameer Taha,
Co-founder & Chief Scientific Officer,
Certo Labs Inc.

"The Martin Walmsley Fellowship provided me with the ability to focus on honing our business plan and on product development early on. The ripple effect this had on our early business development is immeasurable. Being the Walmsley Fellow also provided credibility with potential investors and helped us secure seed financing."
Carlos de Oliveira,
Co-founder & Chief Executive Officer,
Cast Connex Corporation

"Without the award, I would have not been financially able to start my business. This fellowship not only provided the capital to finance the start-up phase, which was essential, but being such a prestigious award has also opened significant doors and has propelled the endorsement of key institutions necessary for our success."
Dr. Leonardo Millon,
Founder,
LifeLike BioTissue Inc.
