Arise Technologies Corporation
ARISE (Appropriate Renewable Intelligent Sustainable Energy) Technologies
Corporation, is an energy technology company dedicated to providing sustainable
energy solutions and making solar energy available in mainstream markets.
ARISE provides a complete range of engineered renewable energy systems,
including custom solutions incorporating advanced building integration,
wind, passive solar design, solar thermal water heating and photovoltaics
for grid-connected, remote and back-up power applications.
OCE, ARISE and the University of Toronto have been developing a new
photovoltaic technology that will significantly reduce the cost of solar
generated electricity. ARISE is developing a manufacturing strategy with
world class partners such as Komag Inc. to develop a whole supply chain
to reduce cost from a systems standpoint and increase the cost effectiveness
of solar. This program will increase the supply of electricity, improve
the environment and create jobs in Ontario.
The renewable energy sector - solar power in particular - represents
a significant investment opportunity. According to a July 2003 Credit
Lyonnais Securities Analyst Report, "Solar power is hot. This year
the sector will grow > 40% with customer demand so high that many
vendors are already "sold out" until early 2006... [Solar]
has realistic prospects for revenue to expand from US$7bn to US$30bn
by 2010".
The costs associated with manufacturing solar cells continue to decline,
while their performance rates continue to increase. Photovoltaic (PV)
materials produce electricity when exposed to sunlight. PV solar panels
are used to generate pollution-free electricity. ARISE's PV modules which
are under development, will convert solar energy directly into electricity
through silicon cells. Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) offset
roofing costs since BIPV will actually be the roof, and solar roofs last
many times longer than traditional roofs due to the materials used.
Adding a solar power system will also add value to homes. An optional
backup power system can keep the lights on if the utility power fails.
ARISE estimates that a solar home will reduce greenhouse gas and smog,
reducing emissions by 20 tonnes a year. Reductions are directly proportional
to the size of the system employed. Each kilowatt hour of electricity
produced by a coal fired plant results in emissions of 1 kilogram of
CO2, plus SO2 and NOx emissions. An ARISE system provides completely
clean electricity unlike the electricity that is produced from conventional
energy sources such as coal, gas, oil and nuclear powered sources.
ARISE Technologies completed its IPO in July 2003. The company, which
employs 14 full-time staff partnered with several homebuilders, CIBC
and the federal government to build 15 solar homes. Each will be equipped
with rooftop PV panels that provide anywhere from 25 to 75 percent of
a home's power needs. ARISE is located in Kitchener, Ontario.
