Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) has established sector networks for strategic initatives to be undertaken in alignment with Ontario’s Innovation Agenda:
These sectors signify a focus on broad industry sectors of importance to the Ontario economy; areas of strength for the Province where large-scale global market opportunities exist (as outlined in Ontario's Innovation Agenda). Of all the major economic drivers in Ontario, these areas of focus were identified as "umbrella" sectors for most opportunities likely to arise for OCE.
Establishing a sector-based approach aligns with the Province's innovation strategy of creating networks across Ontario, while leveraging academic expertise to produce more globally competitive companies. The sector strategy aims to:
- Concentrate investment for maximum impact
- Increase return on investment
- Expand the organization's reach by identifying new opportunities and new partners
- Pull together pockets of strength across the province to position Ontario as a global leader
- Ensure the voice of industry is heard through strategic level engagement with industry
In order to execute this sector strategy, OCE assigned sector leads – experts within the organization who have created, and now lead, Sector Advisory Boards in each of these areas. These Advisory Boards, comprised of 75% industry representation, identify opportunities within the sector, develop strategic initiatives or thrusts, and maintain and enhance a network of industrial and academic expertise.
As the economic landscape and developments in technology advance and change, so too will the strategic thrusts of OCE's Sector Advisory Boards. Their individual strategies are under constant review and revision, under the guidance of Ontario companies, to ensure that OCE and the Province remain at the forefront of innovation.
