Advanced Manufacturing

Ontario companies have been building components, assemblies and systems for customers around the world for more than 150 years and today manufacturing is a major provider of jobs and prosperity to the province. As such, it is a key driver of the Ontario economy. Ontario’s manufacturing and mining industry is strong and diverse, with companies making everything from cars and trucks to telecommunications equipment, computers and electronics, jets and landing gear, chemicals, plastics, transportation, food processing equipment and the processing of food itself.

Ontario is home to thousands of high growth companies in advanced manufacturing, utilizing leading-edge computerized control and manufacturing systems, incorporating the latest in robotics, automation and vision systems. Ontario is also at the forefront of developing and introducing new clean energy efficient systems at all stages of the manufacturing process.

As an organization mandated to enhance Ontario’s economic activity, Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) recognizes the importance of Ontario’s manufacturing sector, with advanced materials and manufacturing industry clustered around five main centres in Ontario:

  • Golden Horseshoe
  • Southwest 401/402 corridors
  • Technology Triangle (Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph and Cambridge)
  • Greater Toronto Area and the 400/404 corridors

OCE strives to leverage the expertise from the thousands of researchers at Ontario’s 44 universities and colleges with the capacity to address innovation challenges in advanced materials and manufacturing, connecting the researchers – and their knowledge - with industrial partners who need them.

Over the past decade OCE has committed in partnership with industry to approximately $50 million in collaborative research and commercialization, with over 63% in follow-on investments coming from industrial partners in cash and in-kind through collaboration.

Given the size of the manufacturing sector, it overlaps with Ontario’s other key sector areas. The strategic focus for OCE in this sector is simple: improve productivity to drive the economy.
