– Ontario Centres of Excellence
(OCE) is bringing together partners from the provincial and federal governments to simplify the process of applying for funding of industry-led academic research and innovation collaboration projects.
“OCE is pleased to have been entrusted to deliver the new industry-led Collaboration Voucher Program on behalf of the Government of Ontario,” said OCE President and CEO Dr. Tom Corr. “We felt it was also important to bring other partners together to increase opportunities for support and create a convenient whole-of-government approach.”
On June 26, the province of Ontario launched the new Collaboration Voucher Program
through which eligible companies can gain access to expertise and other resources from colleges, universities and research hospitals in four streams: Commercialization; Innovation and Productivity; E-Business; and Industry Association R&D Challenge.
“Our government is committed to promoting collaboration among our innovation partners to address global challenges, create jobs and help Ontario’s businesses get ahead,” said Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation. “By connecting Ontario companies with our world-leading researchers and academic resources, the Collaboration Voucher program will help our businesses become more innovative, productive and competitive.”
In order to assist companies with additional support opportunities for the Voucher for Innovation and Productivity, OCE has partnered with the Government of Canada through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) as well as Connect Canada to create a simple process for referrals to complementary innovation services and funding. Eligibility criteria, support guidelines and all funding decisions will be those of the relevant partner organization.
“More than 90 per cent of the companies working with researchers through NSERC report that their projects were a success and contributed to their company goals,” said Janet Walden, Chief Operating Officer, NSERC. “This new partnership opens opportunities by providing companies with a unique window to access a broader combination of tools, responding to their innovation needs.”
“This partnership will make it easier for companies to invest in research and development while providing industry experience to Canadian graduate students,” said Dr. Peter Frise, CEO and Scientific Director, Connect Canada. “It strengthens business competitiveness, the economy, student training and the bonds between federal and provincial innovation supporters.”
OCE has also partnered with NSERC on the first Industry Association R&D Challenge voucher which will connect industry associations or groups of companies with Ontario’s publicly-funded academic research institutions to address sector-wide research and development challenges.
The Collaboration Voucher Program was one of the key recommendations of the Government of Ontario’s Jobs & Prosperity Council.
