TORONTO, Sept. 30, 2013 –
Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) today launched two new fellowships that will help young entrepreneurs turn innovative ideas into burgeoning businesses.
OCE’s new Entrepreneurship Fellowship Programs will support up to 20 Ontario post-secondary students or recent graduates (within the last three years) in contributing to the province’s economic well being.
“We are proud to be enhancing our support for young entrepreneurs through these new fellowships,” says Dr. Tom Corr, President and CEO of OCE. “With our support, more students and recent graduates will have access to the financial support which will help them succeed.”
These new fellowships – one in partnership with the Canadian Youth Business Foundation and the other specifically focused on social sciences and humanities – join OCE’s established fellowships all of which support young entrepreneurs.
“OCE’s fellowships are a critical part of our strategy to ensure that Ontario’s young people have the support they need to become tomorrow’s leaders in an innovative economy,” said Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation. “These new fellowships allow us to continue making important investments in the future of our province.”
The new fellowships are:
- The CYBF-OCE Entrepreneurship Fellowship through which up to 10 projects would receive up to $95,000 each over two years. A $50,000 OCE grant plus mentorship from CYBF would make up the first year award with one of two CYBF loan options (for $15,000 or $45,000) available in the second year. The program is open to a variety of business types in preparing for follow-on funding. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria of both OCE and CYBF to qualify.
- The OCE Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship which will provide $50,000 for one year to as many as 10 entrepreneurial scholars and researchers in social sciences and humanities research to support knowledge mobilization activities such as networking, disseminating, exchanging and co-creating research-based knowledge in Ontario. OCE would provide up to $25,000 with an additional $25,000 available through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) Connection Grant. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria of both OCE and SSHRC to qualify.
OCE currently offers fellowships in the areas of IP commercialization, energy and neuroscience.
