Toronto’s InteraXon wins aptly named Mind to Market award

October 21, 2014

TORONTO, Oct. 21, 2014 – Ariel Garten is making a career of playing mind games…of the best and most therapeutic kind.

Garten is co-founder and CEO of InteraXon, an innovative up-and-coming Toronto-based startup that has been awarded Ontario Centres of Excellence’s 2014 Mind to Market award for its Muse headband. The Muse is a brain fitness tool that helps users learn to manage stress, stay calm and stay focused while improving physical, emotional and cognitive wellbeing.

OCE’s Mind-to-Market Award celebrates the best OCE supported research collaboration, between the business and research communities, resulting in effective commercialization of leading edge ideas and solutions.

“OCE has been a strong supporter of InteraXon over the years because we saw the potential in their technology early on,” said OCE President and CEO Dr. Tom Corr. “Their partnership with University of Toronto was a great example of the collaboration between industry and academia this award recognizes.”

OCE first supported InteraXon and researchers at the University of Toronto through two Technical Problem Solving projects to help the company improve brainwave signal processing and Bluetooth functionality. Since OCE’s support, InteraXon has raised $7.2 million in two separate funding rounds, including investments from Horizon Ventures, OMERS Ventures, and Ashton Kutcher’s A-Grade Investments. They also raised close to $300,000 from an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

InteraXon launched the Muse commercially earlier this year and has been receiving international media coverage.

“InteraXon is a perfect example of collaboration at work — bringing academia, industry and investors together to commercialize a truly innovative product. Companies like InteraXon, are creating high-quality jobs and creating products that improve the everyday lives of Ontarians.”  said Reza Moridi, Ontario’s Minister of Research and Innovation.
