Innovative companies to be featured as part of Ontario Economic Summit

October 26, 2015

TORONTO/NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Oct. 26, 2015 – Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) is partnering with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce to present a showcase of some of the best and brightest companies and innovators the province has to offer at this week’s Ontario Economic Summit.

Four OCE-supported companies considered to be leaders in their field have been selected to display their game-changing innovations as part of the summit that brings together the private and public sectors to consider ways to work together in making Ontario as prosperous as possible.

“OCE is pleased to be able to introduce these four incredible companies to attendees of this important event,” says OCE President and CEO Dr. Tom Corr. “Our stellar track record of finding the next great innovation and supporting its commercialization and business development makes us uniquely qualified to be part of this showcase. “These companies are examples of what happens when industry and academia come together to commercialize cutting-edge, Ontario-based research.”

Featured as part of OCE’s innovation showcase on Oct. 27 are:

  • Pizza Pizza/McMaster University - Funded by fast food leader Pizza Pizza, McMaster University students have created HARvEST, the Pizza Oven Waste Energy Recovery (POWER) system. The technology repurposes waste heat from a conventional pizza oven to power lighting, hot water and space heating. The core technology, known as a thermal electric generator, enables the POWER system to be self-powered - even during a power outage.
  • Applied Brain Research - Originating out of the University of Waterloo, ABR has created the world’s largest functioning computer-based brain model. The program model, known as Spaun, is capable of learning and making decisions based on information it receives. This is the first step toward the democratization of artificial intelligence.
  • Cloud DX - Cloud DX is a Top-10 Finalist in the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition and is the only Canadian finalist. Cloud DX is revolutionizing health care with a device designed to diagnose 15 different medical conditions and monitor vital signs for up to 72 hours.
  • Nymi - Nymi is a wearable authentication device that uses a person’s cardiac rhythm to authenticate their identity. The Nymi is the first of its kind, combining identity with motion control while also providing privacy, trusted security and convenience. The wristband is equipped with an ECG sensor with two electrodes and a six-axis motion sensor that encompasses simple gesture recognition and user input allowing a person secure access to their identification records or password-protected devices.

The Ontario Economic Summit is presented by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and takes place Oct. 27-29 in Niagara Falls.

“Ontario has some truly amazing and inspiring entrepreneurial success stories,” says Allan O’Dette, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “It is essential that business and government come together to support innovators and business owners so that we can accelerate economic growth in the province.”
