The year went out with a bang for OCE board members William J. McClean and Dr. Molly S. Shoichet, who were advised just days before the end of 2012 that they were to be awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals.
The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is described as a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her 60 years of service to this country, while honouring significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. This commemorative medal was presented throughout the year to 60,000 deserving Canadians who, like Her Majesty, have dedicated themselves to service to their fellow citizens, their community and their country.
Recognized for significant efforts on behalf of Canadian industry, retired IBM Canada senior executive McClean has three times been the Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Manufacturers Association and for six years was a member of the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology.
Dr. Shoichet holds the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Tissue Engineering and is Professor of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry, Chemistry and Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. As of September 2012, she is the only living person to be a fellow of three prestigious Canadian Academies: The Canadian Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
2012 was a significant year for recognition of OCE board members; outgoing board member Dr. Suhayya (Sue) Abu-Hakima also received a Diamond Jubilee Medal
and ongoing board member Dr. Hadi Mahabadi was appointed to the Order of Canada
“We congratulate these board members on having their valuable contributions to community recognized by this prestigious award. We are extremely fortunate to have had the benefit of the advice and guidance of such highly distinguished Canadians during their terms as OCE board members,” says Dr. Tom Corr, OCE’s President and CEO.
