Business Development Positions

OCE's Business Development ("BD") team represents our primary interface with private sector, public sector and academic stakeholders. To be successful, BD staff must engage with different sets of stakeholders - each with its own unique priorities - and build bridges between these sometimes disparate groups. Furthermore, BD staff at OCE must have expertise in communication, marketing, strategic planning, finance, and project management.

BD staff at OCE exhibit certain common characteristics:

  • A willingness to listen to clients and partners, and to understand, anticipate and interpret their needs
  • The creativity to "see" opportunities
  • The drive and tenacity to bring opportunities to fruition - to make 'Next' happen
  • A positive attitude, enthusiasm, and a belief in OCE's role and value proposition
  • A reputation for being trustworthy, honest and ethical
  • Timeliness, and an ability to deliver on commitments

All of these characteristics are underpinned by the individual's in depth knowledge of OCE programs, the innovation environment - provincially, nationally and internationally - and related programs (for example NSERC, CIHR, IRAP, etc.)

OCE has three distinct Business Development roles, Director BD, Manager BD and BD Associate. We are often on the lookout for talented individuals to strengthen our business development team such as:

Director BD
Acts as either a program or team leader for business development, providing leadership and direction for programs and/or cross disciplinary teams of BD Managers and BD Associates. A strategist and tactician, forming and nurturing key strategic relationships which will result in new business and strategic relationships for OCE. Demonstrates leadership in promoting, facilitating and delivering OCE programs and resources to industrial partners and other clients.

Typically, BD Directors have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering, applied science or business, with 10+ years industrial experience. They are self-motivated and have exhibited outstanding communication, people and project management skills. As consummate team players our BD Directors are the pulse of the entire BD function.

Manager BD
Promotes, facilitates and delivers the OCE program resources in an effective manner to industry and other clients. Acts as OCE's primary outreach channel to private, public and academic stakeholders - responsible for identifying, soliciting and recruiting prospective OCE research partners; understanding their needs and wants, and matching these with researchers who can develop solutions. Identifies and develops commercialization opportunities in the form of technology and knowledge transfer, technologies for further development and spin-off companies. BD Managers work both as individual contributors and as essential members of BD teams.

OCE's BD Managers have, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree in engineering, applied science or business, plus 5 to 8 years industrial experience. They have highly developed interpretive and analytical skills, as well as excellent communication and project management skills.

BD Associate
This is an entry-level business development role that provides the foundations for learning about OCE's programs, networks, stakeholders through hands-on interactions and experiences. BD Associates promote OCE to stakeholder groups, developing relationships and networks and delivering OCE's programs. These individuals provide project support assistance to senior BD staff at all stages of the process - from "filling the funnel" through to the identification, analysis and management of outcomes.

BD Associates require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering, applied science or business, plus 1 to 3 years of industrial experience. They are self-motivated, inquisitive, resourceful and excellent team players with strong analytical and interpretative skills.

If you feel that one of these roles matches your experience and is of interest to you, please forward your resume to careers@oce-ontario.org.

OCE thanks all applicants for their interest, however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted
