CONII is your business’s gateway to the applied research, development and commercialization expertise of Ontario’s colleges.
The Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII) began in 2006 as a consortium of 10 colleges aimed at helping small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) solve their technical problems, adapting new technologies for the marketplace, and developing new or improved products and processes. It has since grown to include all of Ontario’s 24 colleges, giving it the strength of a true province-wide network.
In 2013, CONII reached a milestone with its integration into Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), a development that arose from discussions between the colleges, OCE and the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment / Ministry of Research and Innovation. The integration was unanimously endorsed as a positive way forward to strengthen the role of the college system as a force for innovation in Ontario.
Now a program under the OCE umbrella, CONII remains dedicated to connecting Ontario businesses to the applied research and commercialization expertise of the Ontario college system, and helping companies innovate to become more competitive in the global environment.
WHAT BUSINESS NEEDS CONII member colleges
are able to address many key challenges that businesses face when trying to innovate. They have access to the space and equipment that businesses often lack; they possess talented faculty and students to provide the necessary innovative thinking for the development of innovative products, processes and services; and they can provide access to funding to support technical and commercialization activities.
ENABLING NEXT-GENERATION INNOVATORS
Working directly with businesses on developing their products and processes also enables the development of the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs. By working closely with faculty and business leaders, students engaged in industry-led, applied research projects gain the innovation skills − both technical and people-centered − necessary to become strong contributors to Canada’s knowledge-based economy.
