OCE & UDMN partner to solve ultra-deep mining challenges

December 8, 2014

TORONTO/SUDBURY, Dec. 8, 2014 – Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) and the Ultra-Deep Mining Network (UDMN), managed by the Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) are teaming up to support solution providers capable of creating the industry needed tools and technologies that will improve resource extraction more than 2.5km under ground.

“Mining has been an important industry for Ontario and its strong commitment to innovation will ensure it continues to play a vital role in our province’s economic prosperity”, says Dr. Tom Corr, OCE’s President and CEO. “Ultra-deep mining poses some unique challenges and has tremendous potential in terms of material recovery. We welcome this opportunity to help advance the commercialization of new technologies that ensure we remain a world leader in mining safety, environmental protection and productivity.”

Through OCE’s Voucher for Industry Association R&D Challenge (VIA) program which was launched in 2013, applied college researchers will be tapped to create innovative new products and processes for six projects being developed to improve the efficiency, safety and costs of resource extraction more than 2.5 kilometres below the earth’s surface.

“OCE’s Voucher for Industry Association R&D Challenge is a great example of industry-college collaboration working to provide solutions that will strengthen Ontario’s economy,” said Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation. “Connecting Ontario’s mining industry with the excellent research resources in our colleges will help businesses become more innovative, productive and competitive while giving students the practical experience they need to succeed in a 21st century economy.”

UDMN is a business-driven network and is supported by members of the mining and oil & gas industries, with the active participation of small-to-medium sized enterprises, industry agencies, research facilities and academia. In January 2014, the Business-led Networks of Centres of Excellence (BL-NCE) program awarded the Network $15 million. The goal of the UDMN is to help the mining industry develop and implement commercially viable research and development projects that result in the deployment of proven innovative technologies.

Managing Director, UDMN Bora Ugurgel reflects on the importance of collaboration, “UDMN leverages collaborative and dedicated networked solution teams of leading experts in achieving innovations for the global mining industry within the ultra-deep mining environment. The approach is that of a joint business model where all members contribute to the cost, and benefit from the Network’s successes, with the goal for driving innovative solutions and making deep mining fiscally viable for the future. Ultimately, the UDMN will lead the way for commercially viable innovations and build capacity by delivering new technologies to the Canadian and global mining industry.”

OCE’s Voucher for Industry Association R&D Challenge (VIA) connects industry associations or groups of companies to address sector-wide research and development challenges. The partnerships support start-ups, SMEs and large companies through projects with Ontario’s publicly funded academic research institutions. VIAs are already in place with the aerospace, life sciences and advanced manufacturing sectors.
